Sumner Coach Zephaniah Powell knew his Cowboys were going to be better in 2010. He was and is right. Sumner is off to a hot 2-0 start to the season, after a big 36-24 road win over the Varnado Wildcats.

Sumner will return home this week with a shot to move to 3-0 for the first time in a long time, as they play host to the Dunham Tigers at the "Hole in Tangipahoa."

Coach Powell was a little concerned about the way his team started the game. But like they say: it's not how you start but how you finish, and the Cowboys finished strong.

Sumner led by four at halftime 16-12 but turned up their play in the second half of the game by scoring three touchdowns in the final 24 minutes of the game. Sumner used a solid ground game and a big defensive play to pull away from the Wildcats in the second half of the game.

Derek Martin would score on a touchdown run for the Cowboys, while Marcus Brumfield had another solid effort by scoring two touchdowns for the Cowboys.  Sumner would have blew the game open in the first half of the game, but three fumbles hindered the Cowboys chances of having a bigger lead at the break.

The Cowboys Defense came up with a score in the game when Tyler Trout stepped in front of an attempted Wildcats pass, picked it off and returned it for a touchdown. Coach Powell told his team that the hard work they put in during the off-season is paying off and now they have to focus on Dunham.
