AMITE--Ask Florida Parishes Arena director Kelly Wells a hard question: What about his favorite event?

He’s diplomatic.

One that is close to his heart is the upcoming Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and its Celebrating Life in South Louisiana.

The benefit is August 18, from 5 to 11 p.m. Tickets $25 per person. A table for eight for $200.

“My grandfather was treated by Mary Bird Perkins Center three times in Hammond, so it is very special to me. They have five locations all in south Louisiana, so the money stays here. Last year the money, $6000, went for gas cards for patients who cannot afford it.”

This year is a casual dance party. Shorts, t-shirts, coolers OK.

So what about the “live chicken drop” event? Wells pauses.

Patrons can place a guess about the chicken’s--ugh--habits.

“It’s a cage with the chicken and 49 numbers on the board.

When someone guesses when the chicken has a special event, they win half the pot.” The rest goes to the charity.
