Amite was able to put up big numbers but came away with a 21-6 win over the visiting Jewel Sumner Cowboys. Credit Sumner with a hard fought effort but the Warriors left the door open far too many times for the Cowboys.
The Warriors dominated the stats but turnovers plagued Amite all night long. Amite turned the ball over five times in the game with three fumbles and two interceptions. Amite’s 7-0 halftime lead could have easily been 21-0 or larger but Amite had a few red zone break downs that kept them from padding their lead.
With a chance to pull off a huge upset the Cowboys came up with a big third quarter and pulled within one point of Amite. Trailing 7-0 the Cowboys got a three-yard TD run from DeAndre Walker to cut the Warriors lead to 7-6 with over eight minutes left in the third.
Sumner had a chance to tie the game with the extra point but they could not convert as Amite held on for a slim lead. The Warriors would respond as they came up with a huge play less than two minutes later.
QB Joe Mason threw a 57-yard TD pass to Thomas Hart to give the Warriors a 13-6 lead. The two teams then went back and forth but neither team could score until later in the fourth quarter.
Taywond Magee put the game on ice for the Warriors with his three-yard run as Amite led 21-6. The Warriors went on to win the game and earn their fifth win of the season. Amite will hit the road this week to take on the Albany Hornets in district action.
Sumner falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in district play. The Cowboys will return home for their final three games beginning this week with the Independence Tigers.
